National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS)
Its former director, Dr.R.M.Varma inaugurated the first training programme in suicide prevention for volunteers in August 1972. A study on 'The Epidemiology of Suicide in Bangalore' by Dr. G. Gururaj and Dr.Mohan Isaac of NIMHANS was instrumental in the setting up the SAHAI Helpline.
SAHAI began as a service project of Rotary Bangalore East. "We've been effective in our work at the SAHAI Helpline because of the close co-ordination between the 3 partners: Rotary Bangalore East, NIMHANS and the Medico Pastoral Association" says Rotary Bangalore East's former President, Mr.K.K.Rajagopal.
Rotary Bangalore East has won many awards in recognition of its leadership role in addressing distress. Rotary Bangalore East has also been actively involved with other public awareness building activities.
