The city of Bangalore is one of the fastest growing metropolis like other Indian cities. The city has been registering increasing number of suicides over a period of time. The rapid social changes that Bangalore has undergone in the last few years are huge. Bangalore is the fastest growing metropolitan city in the country, resulting in an increase in stressors for people. More women joining the workforce, while increasing a family's spending capacity, has also meant additional pressures.
It is common to read , hear or listen about suicides in the city on a day to day basis.
A 2002 study by Dr. G. Gururaj and Dr. Mohan Isaac of NIMHANS revealed there were some 2,000 reported deaths from suicide every year, averaging three to five a day. It is estimated that almost ten to fifteen times this number (20,000-30,000) people attempt suicide and fifty times more will be thinking of suicides in the city each year. Many cases go unreported because suicide is still treated as a criminal offence or because of the social stigma attached to it.The highest rate of suicide is among young people in 15 - 44 years age group. . There is a slightly higher incidence among men. People who live in nuclear families account for 94% of the deaths caused by suicide. There have been more suicides among skilled and semi-skilled workers than among professionals, indicating its high occurrence in lower and middle income households.
Bangalore is more diverse and less homogenous than many cities, with less religious, familial and political integration. Social research shows that suicide varies inversely with the degree of domestic, social and religious integration.
The high rate of suicide that has been registered in Bangalore may be due to better notification, diligent record-keeping by the local police & a reduction in the social stigma that is normally attached to mental illness and suicide, as a result of the efforts of various mental health care institutions in Bangalore, such as NIMHANS.
